Music Heals Minds was born from loss, built on love, and driven by the belief that no one should suffer in silence.
Julius "Cole" Rassin was a gifted guitarist, songwriter, and performer from Wilmington, North Carolina. He started playing music at 8 years old, posted original songs on YouTube, performed downtown Wilmington for anyone who would listen, and once moved to LA to pursue a boy band dream.
In 2016, Cole was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder — a chronic condition combining symptoms of schizophrenia with mood disorder episodes. He sought solace in his music but tragically never found the therapeutic outlet he desperately needed following his diagnosis.
On February 24, 2018, Cole was found in the Cape Fear River. He was 22 years old. His passing left a huge void — but from that void, something powerful emerged.
After Cole's passing, his parents — Mary Belle Jones and Steve Rassin — gave Hannah six of Cole's unfinished songs. She took them to Nashville, worked with professional session musicians, and recorded the album "Sunny Day" — released September 16, 2018.
Driven by the belief that no one should suffer in silence, Hannah and Cole's mother Mary embarked on a mission to ensure that others like Cole could find healing through music.
In 2019, Music Heals Minds was officially founded. The organization's first act was to collect and distribute musical instruments to mental health facilities, offering a lifeline of hope to young adults facing similar struggles.
The album that started it all — six of Cole's original songs, finished and recorded in Nashville by Hannah Kol.
